Banbury Sailing Club hosted a Solo Open meeting on 16
April. This was part of the Solo Midland Series sponsored by Speed Sails.
There were 24 contestants of which 7 were Banbury boats (including John
Ruston’s brother, Robert, who nobly took John’s boat out as John was away on
holiday). The contestants were greeted by a force 2 westerly wind which, in true Banbury fashion, promptly decided to die as they were heading for the start. Much to everyone’s relief it filled in just in time for a first race that was lead convincingly all the way by Colin Newton (Staunton Harold SC) Second and third places were undecided until the last lap, with second finally going to Andy Davis (Bartley SC) and third to Jon Clarke (Rugby & Daventry SC). The remainder of the fleet spread out into several groups each of which enjoyed some close racing. After a very welcome and excellent hot lunch, the second race started in more promising conditions with a different course. Again the fleet spread out with fierce competition at all levels. Chris Brown (RYA) finished first with Richard Pye (Draycote SC) second and Neil Wilkinson (Shustoke SC) third. With nearly every place undecided, 23 boats started the third race and the third course of the day. Once more there was some close sailing at all levels, although Chris Brown had a good lead throughout. Jon Clarke managed to maintain his second place despite being hotly pursued at times, with third place ultimately taken by Neil Wilkinson. Banbury boats had a good day with some very close racing between them and as with the other competitors places were not decided until the end of the third race. We also made a respectable showing, as for once the last boat was a visitor and not a Banbury boat. Many thanks to all who gave their support, and to all the helpers who contributed to a most enjoyable and successful day. Helen Banning
