Open Meeting held at Banbury Sailing Club
on
21st July 2007
Following
a day of torrential rain, 19 entrants braved headline
grabbing floods to enter the Banbury Solo Open, part of the Midland
Travellers Series sponsored by Speed Sails. Several entrants had had
interesting journeys – not sure at times if they were towing their boats or if
the boats were towing them. Despite the grey conditions and wind speeds of
1-2, they were rewarded with close racing throughout the fleet, with nothing
decided until the third race.
Solo Open
The
first race set the scene for the meeting with Jon Clarke, 4712, and
Chris Brown, 4804, fighting it out for first place and with those behind them
battling to the end to obtain hard won places. Brown finished first, having
pulled away on the third lap, Clarke second, with Colin Newton,4336,
third.
Fortified by a hot lunch the
fleet set out for the second race. This time, having gained a significant lead
Clarke was first, Brown second and Newton third. The rest of the fleet battled
on with significant changes in position right up to the finish line.
Competition was fierce in
the third race. It ended with Brown first thereby winning the meeting, Clarke
second and Roger Hopper,4608, third.
Jon Clarke 4712
