Regatta Day 15th July 2007

This was a successful day, with 30 boats taking part (31 if you count the Matthews who sailed the three races in two different boats). Thanks to all the sailors and my duty crew for making it an enjoyable day in difficult conditions – another easterly! Special thanks to Malcolm who computed the results with his laptop running Sailwave.

The event was run using average lap times, which sadly caused some confusion about finishing. It was a good format, but we need to publish some sailing instructions in advance next time.

Duckhams Award

There were at least three contenders this year. Following a capsize and after sailing backwards at buoy 7, the Commodore would have been a strong contender if he had been present at the prizegiving. In the end there was a joint award. Firstly, John Gymer and Xavier Goujon sailed off without all their bungs, and gradually sank during the first race until they had to retire. Secondly, Vic launched his boat with no-one holding the painter. He was fortunate that Purple Dreams passed the duty pontoon within the length of a boathook!

Endeavour Award

There was only one candidate in this category. Richard Clarke and Terry Clapp competed in all three races, endeavouring to cross the finishing line, but sailing outside the outer limit in the first two races, thereby only gaining one result. Sadly, they had left the club when the award was announced.

Godber Trophy

This year, this was awarded to the first all-junior crewed boat. This was won in fine style by Rob Thomas in his Laser. He also finished fourth overall, and may have finished even higher but for being over the start line in the last race.

‘Mixed’ Trophy

This was awarded to the first junior helm with an adult crew, who were Alice and Robert Gallimore. They finished 12th overall.

Adult Trophy

Though she only competed in the second and third races, this was emphatically won by Helen Banning with two firsts.

First Lady

First Novice

After some discussion between the PDO and the Sailing Secretary, this was not awarded.
