Comet
Open at Banbury Sailing Club – Saturday 27th September
On Saturday 27th September
Banbury Sailing Club hosted the annual Comet open meeting at Boddington
Reservoir. 17 boats were entered in the 3 race event, with one visitor
travelling from Devon.
With overnight mist
all, including race officer Vic Gyselynck, were prepared for light winds.
The strength of the wind was correct but its direction less predicable.
This year a new name
was destined to appear on the trophy as neither of the two Coppenhall
brothers took part – leaving only father John from the family to compete.
Making its first appearance was a boat with a XTRA rig; fitted with a
shorter mast and smaller mylar sail but competing on equal terms.
With improving visibility
the first race started on time at 11 am with a running start and an optimistic
4 lap race. After an hour of some very close racing and one lap completed
the race officer shortened the course. First over the line was Brian Whelan
(711) clear of Paul Hinde (844) and Clive Chapman (704).
After a hearty lunch
the race officer announced a change of course for the second race; held
back-to-back with the third. Tea and cakes would be served after racing.
In the second race,
and in improving conditions, Brian Whelan (711) got clear away from the
pack and finished well ahead of John Coppenhall (532) who finished well
ahead of Clive Chapman (704) with Henry Jaggers (800) in fourth.
Brian Whelan (711)
had a leisurely start in the third but climbed up through the field to
finish second behind Henry Jaggers (800) and ahead of John Coppenhall
(532) in third. This result secured second place for Henry.
John Sturgeon (400)
sailing the comet with the XTRA rig finished sixth. First boat home with
a lady at the helm was Rhiain Bevan (724) in overall seventh. First Banbury
boat had Harry Isles (592) at the helm in overall tenth.
Thanks to all who
helped make this a successful event.
