The
Club is run by the members for the members.
Banbury
Sailing Club was formed in 1950 when a small group of people met in a
pub in Banbury and formed the club to start sailing on Boddington Reservoir.
The Club is open to all including keen racers, family sailors and beginners
to sailing. We sail on Boddington Reservoir which is some 90 acres
in extent set in attractive, unspoilt countryside some 7 miles north of
Banbury. Although the club is just in Northamptonshire, the borders
of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire are within a few miles. Members
are drawn from all three counties from centres such as Leamington, Coventry,
Southam, Daventry, Northampton and Banbury as well as from the many villages
in the area.
Boddington Reservoir is owned by British Waterways Board and was originally
built in the late 1700s to supply water to the Oxford Canal along the
summit length between Napton and Banbury. This is still its function
today and BWB also run a very successful day ticket carp fishery.
Due to the layout of the water, conflicts with fishermen are rare and
they do not interfere with the sailing.
Members can sail at any time except on a few occasions in the year when
the club is holding an Open Meeting or
on one of the two annual work party days (normally the first Sunday in
March and the last Sunday in October). Access may be limited during scheduled
training.
Boat owners can park their dinghy and trailer at the club while those
who have yet to buy their own boat can use the club boats (Toppers, GP14s,
Laser Funs & Optimists) to gain more experience of sailing.
The Club is an RYA registered Training Centre and normally runs a number
of courses for members, including adult Start Sailing and a number of
other more advanced courses, together with Power and Safety Boat courses
(to support racing and coaching). The Club also runs a very vibrant and
busy Junior Section.
