Midland Toppers at Banbury

Visitors from five clubs turned out for the sixth Topper Traveller event of the season, this time on the Northamptonshire border at Banbury SC.

With light winds throughout, a bright and dry day saw 19 competitors compete for the first time at Banbury. Hopefully, next year's event may see livelier conditions.

Races one and two were the most keenly fought.

Starts clearly had a major impact on the racing although the positions were tightly contested by the more experienced helms as they battled the conditions, as well as each other.

Race one and two produced the most competitive of the days racing as the helms made good, tactical use of the long first beat, which soon had the sailors split into two distinct fleets. The conditions clearly favoured the more experienced and savvy sailors who made the best use of their light wind experience.

Matt Venables (Sutton) established the first win of the day keeping Hugh Brayshaw (Hollowell) at bay in second place with brother Dan Venables (Sutton) finishing third.

Race two saw a similar race but produced a different winner.

This time it was Peter Newberry (Earlswood Lakes) taking first place from Sam Knight (Sutton) who relegated Dan Venables again to third spot.

Race three became an uphill task for the sailors as the light wind simply failed to appear at the expected race time, leading to a short postponement.

However, once underway – despite the principal competitors giving it their best-effort – the lack of wind really made for a lengthy and somewhat processional final race. This time Hugh Brayshaw beat Sam Knight into second position with Matt Venables finally taking third.

The overall results were:
1 . Hugh Brayshaw (Hollowell)
2. Matt Venables (Sutton)
3. Sam Knight (Sutton)
