Training the Trainers

Dinghy Sailing

We run a number of courses for 'instructors' and coaches to help support the basic range of instruction and training we provide. All our basic and intermediate courses are dependant on club members who volunteer to assist. It's one of the many ways the Club is a bit special. Dinghy Instructors and Assistant Instructors provide the backbone of instruction for Junior sailing as well as the adult Start to Sail courses.

At present we cannot train Senior Dinghy Instructors in-house. Suitable candidates are eligible to be sent on courses at other centres. With ther exception of the Club Racing Coach course, all these courses are taught by Club members.

Much informal training and coaching goes on at other times — the newcomer to sailing will find many members willing to assist and advise.

In order to comply with the Club's Child Protection Policy (accessible in the Members Area) and RYA guidelines all trainers and instructors over the age of 18 must have obtained an enhanced CRB check.

RYA Dinghy Instructor

A course for those who wish to gain the RYA Dingy Instructor Certificate. It is designed mainly for those who wish to instruct the Juniors and the Start Sailing courses. We hope to run this course annually. Instructors are required to hold both Power Boat and First Aid certificates. The DI certificate must be revalidated every five years.

Assistant Instructor

Training to take you to a level where you can assist Dinghy Instuctors with teaching sailing up to RYA Level 2 and the first three stages of the Youth Sailing Scheme (i.e. Junior Sailing). The AI certificate is valid for 3 years and may only be used for instruction at the centre at which it was awarded. Details

Pre-entry assessment

Before you can undertake a Dinghy Instructor course you must demonstrate your skills in this assessment. Some of the day is spent being coached in areas of weakness, and any that 'fail' will be given a positive debrief to let them know the areas they have to concentrate on. The assessment is valid for 12 months.

Club Racing Coach

This course aims to train accomplished sailors to safely deliver fun, quality race training to adults or children within clubs, classes or squads. Unlike the other courses, CRC is delivered by an RYA Coach.

Banbury Sailing Club is an RYA Training Centre.

What does RYA recognition mean?

Instructor Course:
feeling optimistic

Assistant Instructor course: rigging.

Club Racing Coach course: boat righting practise.
