Powerboat & Safety Boat Training

Banbury Sailing Club is an RYA Training Centre.

The Club trains its members to use the powerboats effectively. We have a variety of powerboats. Since every member is required to be part of the Duty Team on at least one Sunday a year we need to able able to make sure that they are trained to assist. Powerboat skills are also in demand with the Juniors on Saturday. You may not be able to assist in training but you can help keep them safe. All members are encouraged to train to Safety Boat level. We strongly recommend that you also attend the First Aid course.

RYA Power Boat (Adults, Level 1&2)

Learn the basic skills required to use the Club safety boats. Normally run twice or more per year, at the beginning and end of the sailing season, depending on demand. The course takes 2 days, with almost the whole time being spend on the water. Details.

The RYA specify a minimum age of 12 for this course. 12 to 18 year olds holding this certificate should only use powered craft when under the supervision of a responsible adult.

Note:

Except as part of organised training under the supervision of a Dinghy or Powerboat Instructor or Racing Coach, no-one under the age of 18 may drive a Club powerboat at Banbury Sailing Club unless they are accompanied by an adult.

RYA Power Boat (Juniors, Level 1)

Specifically for age 8+, to learn the very basic skills required to use a power boat safely. This one day course is given throughout the year, either in one day or on two successive Saturday afternoons. Holders of this certificate may take part in the Club heats of the RYA Honda Youth RIB Challenge.

8 to 11 year olds holding this certificate should only use powered craft when under the supervision of a responsible adult on board the craft.

12 to 18 year olds holding this certificate should only use powered craft when under the supervision of a responsible adult.

RYA Safety Boat

Techniques for rescue and boat recovery, but the course also covers aspects of race management and techniques for the rescue of windsurfers, canoes, kayaks and kite surfers. It's at this point that you really become useful! The minimum age for this course is 16.

This two day course is held at least once per year, more often on demand. Details.

Safety Boat Refresher

A one-day course intended to help you brush up your skills. The course will focus on recovering people, and then on recovering dinghies. There should be opportunity to practise a variety of recovery techniques. Details.

Powerboat Instructor

The Club is very keen to train a number of Powerboat Instructors who will complement the existing team and permit us to continue delivering the RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat courses. Under new RYA regulations participants must have satisfactorily completed a pre-entry assessment. If you feel you have the necessary skills, please contact us.
