Course Detail

RYA Start Dinghy Sailing

Level 1 Start Sailing — introduction to the sport of sailing;
Level 2 Basic Skills — sets out the foundations of sailing;
Level 1 & 2 courses are run in parallel. There are normally 2–3 per year. The Club owns a number of boats which 'new' sailors are encouraged to use. More.

Sailing with Spinnakers

Understand how to sail a dinghy rigged with a symmetric or asymmetric spinnaker. More.

Better Sailing

To be based on the new RYA 'Level 3' syllabus. More.

Race Coaching/Improvers

Not a specific RYA course, but coaching will be tailored to the group. If you want to improve starting, mark rounding, boat handling and boat speed, or want to understand how racing at Banbury works, this is for you. Video debriefs will be used. No RYA certificates are awarded. More.

RYA Power Boat (Adults, Level 1&2)

Learn the basic skills required to use the Club safety boats. Frequency: 2 or more per year, depending on demand. More.

RYA Power Boat (Juniors, Level 1)

Specifically for age 8+, to learn the very basic skills required to use a power boat safely. More.

RYA Safety Boat

Techniques for rescue and boat recovery.
Frequency: at least 1 per year, more on demand. More.

Safety Boat Refresher

A one-day practical course with the opportunity to get very wet recovering 'people' (first!) and boats (later). More.

RYA First Aid

What to do if someone has an accident on or off the water. Instructors must have a valid certificate. The course is run at least once each year to ensure all have the opportunity of keeping up to date.

Assistant Instructor

Training to take you to a level where you can assist instuctors with teaching sailing up to RYA Level 2 and also the first three stages of the Youth Sailing Scheme (i.e. Junior Sailing).

Get Back on the Water

The Club takes part in this RYA scheme where an instructor/coach assists 'returners' over a number of Wednesday evenings in the summer.

The course is almost entirely practical on the water, so participants need to have their boats rigged and on the pontoon ready to sail at 6.30 pm. Therefore, this course is not suitable for those who are complete beginners, rather, for those who can at least prepare their boat and sail a triangular course on the water. More.

OnBoard

We are also part of OnBoard, where youngsters from local organisations are encouraged to try out sailing, under suitable supervision.

Other training

Much informal training goes on at other times — the newcomer to sailing will find many members willing to assist and advise.
