Course Detail
RYA
Start Dinghy Sailing
This leads to RYA Level 1 or Level 2 depending on ability.
Level 1 Start Sailing - intro to the sport of sailing.
Level 2 Basic Skills - sets out the foundations of sailing.
Frequency: normally 2 per year. The Club owns a number of boats which
'new' sailors are encouraged to use.
Details
RYA
Advanced Modules
Frequency: at least one course per year. Depending on demand and Instructor
availability similar non-RYA 'Improvers'
courses may be held which will cover the key aspects of the advanced modules.
Seamanship
Skills
How to handle a boat in all
circumstances and solve problems afloat.
Sailing
with Spinnakers
Understand how to sail a dinghy rigged
with a symmetric or asymmetric spinnaker.
Start
Racing
To build the confidence, skills &
knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions.
Improvers (the 5 essentials)
Frequency: at least one course per year. Intended to help those who have recently completed the Start Sailing course to reinforce
(and remind themselves of) the skills they learned.
RYA
Power Boat (Adults, Level 1&2)
Learn the basic skills required to use the Club safety boats.
Frequency: 2 or more per year, depending on demand. Details
RYA
Power Boat (Juniors, Level 1)
Specifically for age 8+, to learn the very basic skills required to use
a power boat safely.
.
RYA
Safety Boat
Techniques for rescue and boat recovery.
Frequency: at least 1 per year, more on demand. Details.
RYA
First Aid
What to do if someone has an accident on or off the water. Instructors
must have a valid certificate. The course is run each year to ensure all
have the opportunity of keeping up to date. Details.
RYA
Dinghy Instructor
A course for those who wish to gain the RYA Instructor Award. Mainly designed
for those who wish to instruct the Juniors and the Start Sailing courses.
We hope to run these courses annually. Instructors are required to hold
both Power Boat and First Aid certificates.
Assistant
Instructor
Training
to take you to a level where you can assist instuctors with teaching sailing
up to RYA Level 2 and also the first three stages of the Youth Sailing
Scheme (i.e. Junior Sailing). Details
Pre-entry
assessment
Before you can undertake an Instructor course you must demonstrate your
skills in this assessment. Some of the day is spent being coached in areas
of weakness, and any that 'fail' will be given a positive debrief to let
them know the areas they have to concentrate on. Details.
The assessment is valid for 12 months.
Club
Principal Race Officer briefing
How to organise and run club races. Every Club member does one 'duty'
a year and many go on to take charge as the Principal Duty Officer. The
course is intended for those who want to become a PDO, have had PDO-hood
thrust upon them, and existing PDOs who want a refresher. It will de-mystify
the art of setting courses, the start, using the timer, flags, and making
tea. And identify the right flags to fly from the flag-pole.
Improvers
courses
A chance to revise and practise your skills. Depending on the participants
needs and wishes, and the Instructors available, this course may be indistinguishable
from an Advanced Module.
Club
Racing Coach
This course aims to train accomplished sailors to safely deliver fun,
quality race training to adults or children within clubs, classes or squads.
RYA
Yachmaster and Coastal Skipper
We aim to cover the shore-based component of the RYA's popular course
on navigation, safety and seamanship. Details will be added when more
information is available.
Powerboat
Instructor
We hope to be able to run a course to train a number of Powerboat Instructors
who will complement our existing team and permit us to continue delivering
the RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat courses. Under new RYA regulations participants
must have satisfactorily completed a pre-entry assessment. Details will
be added when more information is available.
Much
informal training goes on at other times - the newcomer to sailing will
find many members willing to assist and advise.
