Youth Section Newsletter 2022

Welcome to the 2022 season of Junior sailing at Banbury Sailing Club.

Following on from last year we are looking forward to operating sailing sessions in a more normal situation. As things stand, this year we can use double (and multiple) handed boats, we have uninterrupted access to the club house, we have some new boats to try out and some new Dingy Instructors (DIs) to help out.

This year we have a slight change in the admin team, Arthur and Tom are still around, but unfortunately Dan has moved house and therefore is being replaced Steve Burgoine, who many of you will know as he attended most of last years sessions with his boys (Hes also a very good sailor which helps)

Whats going on

  • Youth Sailing (YS)
    1. There are 10 normal youth training sessions scheduled starting with YS 1 on Sat 23 April. These training days will be coached sailing by instructors and with safety cover and follow the RYA syllabus, so we invite all abilities to these sessions. Numbers will be limited so book early, especially if you require a club boat.
    2. We do require that families join the club and sign up to the Junior Coaching course via the website prior to commencing youth training. However, if you wish to visit us to take a look prior to joining then send us an email and we will try and accommodate this. Single or monthly payment options are available.
  • Northamptonshire Youth Series (NYS)
  • NSSA (National Schools Sailing Association)

We are actively trying to encourage Banbury sailors to take part in the Northamptonshire Youth Series. It is a very easy and laid back introduction to racing and is open to all those children that can confidently sail a triangular course. The first event is 21 May at Draycote and if there is demand we may take the clubs multi-boat trailer to help parents with transport. A few of us are planning to be there with our children, to help out and hopefully alleviate any nerves you may have. I remember the first time I went to one of these events with my son, and was very nervous about the what; where and how, however I was helped by other Banbury parents, and therefore it is our turn to help others.

The NSSA Regatta sailing week is happening again this year, and is based at Gratham Sailing Club in Cambridgeshire. It is planned from the 24 to 29/30 July and is a fantastic event for children who are confident sailors. Its a week of camping, sailing and racing without the parents (although parental help is gladly accepted), as part of the Northamptonshire Sailing Team.

Parents

Banbury Sailing Club is not a commercial organisation, the junior sailing section is run by parents and ex-parents who are all donating their time for free, the cost of the course is used to maintain the facilities / boats etc, therefore we would ask that all parents help out in any way they feel capable. Such help includes

  • Rigging boats There are always plenty of experienced people around to show how its done if you are new to sailing.
  • Launching boats (Motor boats and sailing boats)
  • Recovering boats (Motor boats and sailing boats)
  • Manning the safety boat (If qualified) Banbury runs courses to train safety boat crew and helm if you want to do this role!
  • Helping out in the galley (kitchen)
  • If you have sailing experience and especially if you are some form of dingy instructor, or would like to be, then we would be very interested in talking to you. We are always looking to expand our band of instructors many who have being doing it for many years.

We all look forward to seeing you on the 23 April for our first session of what looks like a busy sailing season. In the meantime the course is open for booking, and the 1st session will be open for booking on 17 April.

Best Regards

Arthur, Steve and Tom
