We race a wide range of boats. The most popular being

  • GP14, Lark, Laser, Merlin Rocket, Phantom Solo, Topper and Optimist

Racing is close and competitive but above all friendly and fun.

A series of Open Meetings are hosted at BSC attracting sailors from around the country and a Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association event is held every year.

Details of our main racing series, for the most up to date calendar of racing, please visit the Calendar section of the website. There is also an excel sheet at the botttom of this page, but please note, this may not be the most up-to date summary.

Sunday series

Note: When there is youth sailing on a Sunday the first two races will be coached for any youths and adults who wish to race

Mass start.

First race, first signal 1025hrs

As far as possible races 1 & 2 sailed back to back (or at least reasonably close together). Second race first signal not before 1120hrs and not after 1140hrs.

Third race first signal not before 1255hrs.

Race Four will follow race three

Length of race 40 minutes for a mid-fleet boat.

Series qualifying criteria - A helm is deemed to have qualified when he/she has sailed in 35% or more races (rounded down) in the Spring and Autumn Series and 30% or more races (rounded down) in the Early Summer and Summer Series.  A helm must have undertaken a Duty in the relevant series.  A helms series score shall be taken from the best 30% or 35% of race scores from a series (rounded down) depending on the series.

It is the helm that scores, not the boat/class.

Prizes for this series are currently being reviewed but are likely to be:

1st, 2nd, 3rd overall.

1st double hander and first single hander not in the top 3.

1st female (helm or crew).

1st youth.

1st novice (still in first 2 seasons sailing).

1st boat in a fleet where 3 or more boats qualified for the series.

Wednesday coached series

Individual coached (pursuit) series.  Personal handicaps to be specific to this race (as the race duration is different to the Sunday pursuits)

First gun Not before 1850hrs.

Length of Race 45 minutes fixed (Topper start at 0).  This may well be adjusted depending on which classes of boats are there on the evening

Series qualifying criteria and prizes do be determined

Saturday afternoon coached events

This series runs from May to mid August.  For 2020 youth sailing/coaching will finish at 1330hrs and the intention is to have a series of coached events in the afternoon for adults and youths.  The format for each week will vary, but all sessions will be coached and will include, pursuits, handicaps, speed trials, bang and back (and anything else we can think of).   No formal series, but plenty of awards/prizes to hand out for all.
