Sunday Duties - Roles, Responsibilities and Volunteering

We would remind you that all members are required to volunteer for 2 Sunday duties per year to support the clubs activies

The list of available duties are shown below your membership details, on the members portal landing page.

To accept a duty, simply look at the dates you can attend and the roles available to you will be indicated by a "Volunteer" button.

Simply click the button and we will send you a notification confirming the role (and reminders closer to the date). If no button is shown next to a role then either the position has been filled, or we do not have records that you are qualified to do the role (if you know differently, please let us know so we can update our records)

A quick guide to the various roles, who they are open to and what to expect if you Volunteer follows.

Principle Duty Officer (PDO): Overall responsibility for the safe and enjoyable running of the days racing

  • Only People who have been on the PDO course at BSC are able to volunteer for this role (the system will not allow you volunteer by accident!)

Duty Team 1 & 2: Support the PDO in running the racing - duty open to all members

  • No specialist knowledge is required, just a willingness to get involved and support the PDO in raising flags, noting down sail numbers and times and/or if qualified, driving the committee boat. Note you may be on the water in any weather, so please come prepared!

Safety Boat Helm: Provide Safety cover for the Racing

  • In general the safety boat helm will have been on the safety boat course at BSC, (the system will not allow you volunteer by accident!) but if no qualified person is available then the helm must have PB2 qualification. Note you may be on the water in any weather, so please come prepared!

Safety Boat Crew: Supporting the Safety Boat Helm in any incident on the water - duty open to all members

  • No experience is necessary to undertake this role and normally there is little to do during a days racing. That said you need to be prepared and able to assist in recovering a person or boat in the event of an incident. In extreme circumstances you may need to enter the water yourself. Note you may be on the water in any weather, so please come prepared and spare clothes are advisable, a westuit or other immersable kit is advantageous - better to be prepared for the worst and not use it than the other way round.

Galley: Only available to non-sailing partners

  • The person running the Galley is not expected to prepare food other than cutting cake! Their role is simply to ensure that tea and coffee stocks are maintained during the day and that the Galley area remains clean and tidy. You don't even need to wash up cups unless you are feeling generous, as the members on site should be willing to do this themselves. So it's a nice role for people wanting to spend a relaxing day by the water when perhaps their partner is out on the water. Non-sailing partners can also volunteer for Duty team should they wish
